Bangor, ME – The streets of Bangor have been hit by a major blow as Mario Lee, affectionately known in the underworld as ‘Moe,’ has been sentenced to over 18 years for his role in a massive heroin distribution conspiracy.
Acting United States Attorney Richard W. Murphy revealed that Lee, now 42 and hailing from Bangor with ties to the Bronx, was today meted out 218 months in federal prison by Chief Judge Nancy Torresen, along with an additional eight years of supervised release. The sentence comes as a result of Lee’s guilty plea on October 31, 2016.
According to court records, between August 2013 and September 2015, Lee orchestrated a web of illegal drug activity in the Bangor area. He supplied dealers with heroin, while co-conspirators introduced customers, ferried him to transactions, and even allowed him to use their homes as distribution hubs. For his services, Lee compensated them with more heroin.
But Lee’s criminal history was no secret. His sentence is enhanced due to a prior drug trafficking conviction in New York, demonstrating the federal government’s zero-tolerance approach to repeat offenders.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation that led to Lee’s capture. This case has been a high-priority part of the Department of Justice’s Strategy to Combat the Opioid Epidemic, reflecting the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug rings fueling the crisis in Maine and across the nation.
Lee’s sentence sends a stark reminder that those who deal in the illegal drug trade will face severe consequences. His downfall is another victory for law enforcement agencies dedicated to keeping communities safe from the dangers of heroin and other opioids.
