Amanda K. Wentzell, Mail Theft, Maine 2016

Bangor, Maine – In a stunning turn of events, Amanda K. Wentzell, 26, from Augusta, has pleaded guilty to mail theft while employed as a clerk at the Temple post office in Maine. According to Acting United States Attorney Richard W. Murphy, Wentzell admitted to using a stolen prepaid debit card worth $100.

Wentzell began her criminal spree in February 2016 when she started working at the Temple post office. The grim truth came to light in July 2016 when a concerned Temple resident reported that his son had not received a U.S. mail-ordered prepaid debit card. An investigation soon pinpointed Wentzell as the culprit.

Documents reveal that between April and August of that year, the defendant systematically opened and activated several pieces of mail, including the aforementioned debit card. She resigned her USPS position on August 9, 2016, after nearly six months of systematic theft.

Wentzell now faces up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. Her sentencing will be deferred until after a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office is completed.

The investigation was jointly conducted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the USPS Office of Inspector General.

Wentzell’s actions have cast a dark shadow over the Postal Service, raising questions about mail safety and employee integrity.
