Independence, Mo. – A brutal encounter with federal law enforcement landed Jermaine Arrington behind bars for a significant stretch of his life. The 33-year-old was sentenced to serve seven years and 11 months in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to impeding or obstructing an officer.
Arrington’s sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes, came after a harrowing incident where he lunged at a deputy marshal while in custody. The confrontation resulted in a broken thumb for one of the officers involved, leaving a scar on both the man and the case.
The saga began when Arrington was arrested on Jan. 8, 2016, for violating his supervised release. He had served six years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Upon arrival at the detention facility, he managed to conceal marijuana in his mouth before attempting a bold defiance by spitting it into the trash.
But his defiance did not stop there. As court documents reveal, Arrington lunged at the deputy, leading to a physical struggle that required the intervention of two other deputies. Despite the efforts to subdue him, Arrington proved resistant, only being cuffed after a brief but intense scuffle.
The defendant’s criminal history is as extensive as his resistance was fierce. Prior convictions include not just assaults on officers but also multiple instances of resisting arrest and assaulting law enforcement. His actions during this federal case were no exception to this pattern of behavior, with Arrington running from police and continuing to resist even after being tased.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce E. Clark prosecuted the case, while the U.S. Marshal’s Service conducted the investigation that exposed Arrington’s latest bout of violent confrontation with authority.
