South Dakota Man Sentenced for Possession of Firearm by a Prohibited Person

A 29-year-old Whitewood man has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon.

Travis Longfox, 29, was found in possession of a Kel-Tec .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol in Rapid City in July 2019. The discovery led to Longfox’s conviction for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a charge that stems from his previous felony convictions.

In addition to the 36-month prison sentence, Longfox was ordered to serve 3 years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service.

The investigation into Longfox’s firearm possession was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a program aimed at reducing violent crime.

PSN brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community. By focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs, the program seeks lasting reductions in crime.

Longfox’s sentencing marks the latest in a string of convictions under the PSN initiative, which has proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. The program will continue to play a critical role in the fight against violent crime in the region.
