Renae Jo Hopkins, Methamphetamine Trafficking, South Dakota 2020

MISSION, SD – A pair from Mission, South Dakota, are staring down the barrel of potentially life-altering prison sentences after being indicted on federal methamphetamine trafficking charges. Renae Jo Pacheco, a/k/a Renae Jo Hopkins, age 51, and Thomas Pacheco, Sr., age 29, are accused of orchestrating a years-long conspiracy to flood the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation with the deadly drug.

The indictment, handed down on August 11, 2020, alleges that Hopkins and Pacheco “knowingly and intentionally” conspired with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. The scheme reportedly spanned from no later than January 1, 2015, to January 1, 2020 – a brazen operation that investigators say saturated the reservation with the highly addictive substance.

Both defendants appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on August 24, 2020, entering pleas of not guilty. But the stakes are staggeringly high. Upon conviction, the pair face a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence. A hefty $10,000,000 fine also looms, alongside at least 5 years – and potentially a lifetime – of supervised release. They will also be required to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for each count. Restitution may also be ordered by the court.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, points to a sophisticated operation. Authorities haven’t released details on the scope of the alleged trafficking ring or the number of individuals involved beyond the Pachecos. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is leading the prosecution, promising a vigorous pursuit of justice.

Currently, Renae Jo Hopkins is being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting trial. Thomas Pacheco, Sr., has been released pending trial. No trial dates have been set, leaving the pair in legal limbo. It’s crucial to remember that these are merely accusations, and both Hopkins and Pacheco are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case, bringing you updates as they develop. The Rosebud Sioux Reservation, like many Native American communities, has been disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis and methamphetamine addiction. This indictment represents a significant attempt to dismantle a criminal enterprise preying on vulnerable populations. The full extent of the damage caused by this alleged operation remains to be seen.
