Samuel Iron Shell, Assault with a Broomstick, South Dakota 2025

GRIMY NEWS: A Saint Francis, South Dakota man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for a brutal assault with a dangerous weapon.

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced on July 21, 2025, that U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte imposed the sentence upon Samuel Iron Shell, age 23. The defendant was convicted of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and will serve three years and ten months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Iron Shell’s crime spree began on December 24, 2024, when he was at a residence near St. Francis within the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. His significant other became the victim as Iron Shell flew into a rage and struck her repeatedly with a broomstick. The woman suffered a broken finger in the attack.

The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to its connection to the Major Crimes Act, which requires certain violent crimes occurring in Indian Country to be tried in federal court. Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement investigated the incident, with Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the prosecution.

Iron Shell was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2024 and pleaded guilty on April 24, 2025. Along with his prison term, he has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The defendant is now remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, facing life behind bars for his violent crime against an innocent woman.
