RAILING CITY – The grim streets of Rapid City were echoed with the hard truth of justice this week as U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell revealed that 29-year-old Mexican national Javier Cruz-Martinez faced a stern sentence for his illegal reentry into the United States after being deported in 2017.
Cruz-Martinez, who found himself back on American soil in March of this year, was sentenced to time served and ordered to be removed from the U.S. once more by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on July 14, 2025.
The wheels of justice were set into motion back in April when a federal grand jury indicted Cruz-Martinez for Illegal Reentry after Deportation. He entered a guilty plea just over a month later, demonstrating the swift nature with which such cases are handled by the U.S. legal system.
Operation Take Back America, a broad-scale initiative targeting illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations, played a pivotal role in this case, marshaling resources from various departments to ensure Cruz-Martinez’s return to Mexico. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder was instrumental in the prosecution of this crime, representing the Department of Justice with unwavering resolve.
The investigation into Cruz-Martinez’s illegal reentry was led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a testament to the collaborative efforts between federal agencies to safeguard national security and community safety.
As he was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, Javier Cruz-Martinez’s sentence serves as a stark reminder that illegal reentry is no joke – it’s a felony with serious consequences for those who defy the law.
