Kristin Renee Zelonish Edwards, a 39-year-old California woman, defrauded Glacier Bank of over $170,000 by depositing 12 fraudulent savings bonds at four different bank branches in Northwest Montana between October 2022 and January 2023. Edwards claimed she found the bonds while going through her deceased grandmother’s items, but witnesses testified this was a lie. The savings bonds had Edwards’ Social Security Number printed on them, and had issue dates as early as 1980, seven years before Edwards was born.
The U.S. Secret Service analyzed the savings bonds and found they had several common defects and were not made with the printing presses used for authentic savings bonds. The bonds were linked to other fraudulent bonds deposited in Idaho and Colorado by an unindicted co-conspirator. Edwards’ scheme was uncovered in February 2023 when Glacier Bank received notice from the United States Treasury Department that one of the savings bonds was fraudulent.
Edwards was found guilty on four counts of bank fraud after a two-day trial in February 2026. U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy presided over the case. Edwards was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $170,666.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana. The sentence reflects the seriousness of Edwards’ crimes and the need to protect the financial system from fraud and deception.
