BIRMINGHAM – The grim tale of financial chicanery unfolds as Kevin Vann, former president of Bibb County’s BankTrust Bank, now Trustmark National Bank, stands accused of orchestrating a scheme that bilked his employer out of over $100,000 through 31 fraudulent loans.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alabama has filed a 31-count information against Vann, 55, charging him with bank fraud for the elaborate scheme that spanned from October 11, 2011, to March 7, 2014.
In a plea agreement as dark as his crimes, Vann acknowledges his 20-plus years in the banking industry and his role as community president. He admits to exploiting customer data to forge loans and channel their proceeds into his own pockets, businesses he controlled, and to settle debts.
The defendant has agreed to plead guilty to one count of bank fraud, a charge that could see him behind bars for up to 30 years and saddle him with a fine of $1 million. Vann will also be required to pay $120,774 in restitution to Trustmark National Bank and surrender the same amount as proceeds of illegal activity.
The U.S. Secret Service has been instrumental in unraveling this intricate tale of deception, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Williamson Barnes is leading the prosecution against Vann.
As justice finally catches up with Kevin Vann, the once trusted banker’s fall from grace serves as a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of financial corruption that can lurk even in the most reputable institutions.
