Bank Robber Gets 40 Months: Coffee County Man Sentenced for Heist

A Coffee County man has been sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for bank robbery and attempted bank robbery. Benjamin Michael Smith, a resident of Coffee County, Alabama, was sentenced by United States District Judge Mark E. Fuller.

According to court documents, Smith attempted to rob Citizen’s Bank in Coffee County on February 16, 2010, and later robbed CB&T Bank in the same county on December 5, 2011. During his guilty plea hearing, Smith admitted to the crimes.

Smith was charged with federal felony charges in October 2012 and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jerusha T. Adams. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the assistance of the Enterprise Police Department.

Smith will serve 40 months in federal prison and will be placed on three years of supervised release upon his release from prison. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service.

The sentencing comes as a relief to local residents who were affected by the heists. “This sentence brings a sense of closure and justice to the community,” said George L. Beck, Jr., United States Attorney. “We are committed to holding those responsible for these crimes accountable.”
