ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A brazen bank robbery in Albuquerque has left one suspect behind bars, and another on the loose. Carl ‘‘Wizard’’ Gutierrez, 44, of Albuquerque, appeared in federal court on Aug. 5 for a detention hearing, charged with bank robbery and aiding and abetting.
Gutierrez will remain in custody pending trial, as he faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. According to a criminal complaint and other court records, on July 15, Gutierrez and an accomplice allegedly robbed the BBVA Bank on Candelaria Road NE in Albuquerque.
The pair allegedly entered the bank, approached the teller counter, and the accomplice made his way behind the counter, opening cash drawers and grabbing money. They then allegedly fled the bank in a gold minivan.
The FBI Violent Crime Task Force, with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department, investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Niki Tapia-Brito is prosecuting the case.
A complaint is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, Gutierrez faces up to 25 years in prison.
The BBVA Bank robbery is just the latest in a string of brazen crimes to hit the Albuquerque area. Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
The FBI is still seeking the accomplice in the BBVA Bank robbery. If you have any information regarding this case, contact the FBI immediately.
