Scott E. Coats, Bank Robbery, Louisiana 2013

BATON ROUGE, LA—A vicious bank robber has been brought to justice after a decade-long wait. Scott E. Coats, a 44-year-old Baton Rouge resident, was indicted for robbing the First NBC Bank in Denham Springs on August 16, 2013.

According to the indictment, Coats made off with approximately $1500 during the robbery. This brazen crime is just one in a long string of similar offenses for Coats. In 2005, he was convicted of robbing two banks in the area: the Hancock Bank in Baton Rouge on November 1, 2003, and an AmSouth Bank in Denham Springs on November 5, 2003.

Coats’ 2005 conviction led to an 84-month prison sentence and three years of supervised release for each robbery. The sentences were served concurrently. However, in 2011, while on supervised release, Coats’ release was revoked due to violations of the terms of his supervision. He was subsequently sentenced to an additional 24 months imprisonment.

Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer M. Kleinpeter, who also serves as Deputy Criminal chief, is leading the prosecution of Coats. The investigation was a joint effort between the Denham Springs Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Coats’ history of bank robberies has left many in the community shaken. The people of Denham Springs will be able to rest a little easier knowing that this individual is behind bars.

The case serves as a reminder that justice may be slow, but it is always served. The people of Louisiana can be grateful for the hard work of law enforcement and the dedication of prosecutors like Jennifer M. Kleinpeter.

In a statement, Kleinpeter said, ‘We are committed to protecting our communities from violent crime. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.’
