Eric Dwayne Williams, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Louisiana 2014

SHREVEPORT, La. – In a hard-hitting blow to the streets of Shreveport, Eric Dwayne Williams, 39, faced a six-year prison sentence after being caught with a Glock, model 27, .40 caliber pistol and ammunition. Sentenced by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote, Williams was also handed three years of supervised release following his conviction for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Williams’ arrest in June 2014 began as a sex offender registration violation warrant from California. It quickly escalated when authorities discovered the registered sex offender had been in possession of the firearm and ammunition, which was unlawful due to his prior nine felony convictions in California. These included failure to register as a sex offender, second-degree burglary, receiving stolen property, and another firearms charge.

United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced the sentence, emphasizing that the ATF; U.S. Marshals Service; the Louisiana Department of Corrections and Public Safety, Probation and Parole; and the Shreveport Police Department all contributed to the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Gillespie Jr. prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program dedicated to reducing violence through the enforcement of federal firearms laws.

Project Safe Neighborhoods’ relentless pursuit of illegal firearms has led to another successful operation in Shreveport, sending a clear message that felons like Williams will face severe consequences for their actions. The forfeiture of the firearm and ammunition adds an extra layer of justice as it removes these deadly weapons from potential misuse.

As the community reacts to this sentence, there is a sense that justice has been served. However, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who fail to comply with the law, especially when they have a history of violent crime and sex offenses.

This case underscores the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to combat gun violence and protect the public. Williams’ sentence is a testament to the collaborative efforts that make communities safer across the nation.
