ALBUQUERQUE – The grimy details of a bank heist in New Mexico have reached an unsettling conclusion as Jennifer Marissa Miera, 23, from Questa, N.M., entered a guilty plea yesterday in federal court for her role in the October 6, 2016, robbery of the People’s Bank in Red River.
Miera, along with co-defendants Troy Montoya and Shawn Michael Goodrum Jr., were nabbed by law enforcement following the crime. Miera, while employed as a personal banker at the bank, conspired with Montoya to orchestrate the heist, purchasing gloves and masks ahead of time. The complaint reveals an unsuccessful attempt by Miera to recruit Goodrum into the plot.
Goodrum, instead, resorted to blackmail, extorting a share of the proceeds from Miera after threatening to expose her involvement to police.
Miera, Montoya, and Goodrum were formally indicted on November 1, 2016. The indictment charged Miera and Montoya with conspiracy to rob a bank and with actual bank robbery, while Goodrum faced charges for receiving proceeds from the crime.
In a stark reversal of roles, Miera admitted guilt to Counts 1 and 2 of the indictment without a plea agreement. Should she be sentenced as charged, she faces up to 20 years in federal prison. A sentencing hearing is yet to be scheduled.
Montoya and Goodrum maintain their innocence, with trials set to commence on April 7, 2017, in Santa Fe, N.M. The criminal charges against them are mere accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
