Jessica Henderson Berthelot, 29, of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, is going to federal prison for stealing mail from unsuspecting residents across the Northshore. The crime spree, which unraveled in 2015, involved the systematic pilfering of 1,428 pieces of mail from residential mailboxes—personal letters, checks, and sensitive documents all ripped off in a brazen theft operation.
Berthelot pleaded guilty to Theft of Mail and was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk to six months in federal custody. In addition to incarceration, she was ordered to pay $2,650 in restitution and will serve three years under court supervision upon release. The sentence marks the end of a years-long investigation into one woman’s campaign of quiet but damaging theft.
The probe began in September 2015, launched jointly by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Detectives traced a pattern of missing mail across neighborhoods, eventually zeroing in on Berthelot as the suspect. Postal inspectors built the case through surveillance, forensic checks, and mailbox audits that confirmed the staggering volume of stolen correspondence.
Investigators say Berthelot didn’t just steal mail at random—she targeted envelopes containing checks, personal identification, and financial documents, raising fears of identity theft and fraud. While the full extent of downstream damage remains unclear, authorities warn victims of potential credit fraud and urged anyone with missing mail to file reports and monitor their accounts.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, who oversaw the prosecution, credited the persistence of federal and local investigators for holding Berthelot accountable. “Mail theft is not a victimless crime,” Polite said in a statement. “It erodes trust, invades privacy, and can lead to devastating financial harm.”
The case was prosecuted by Fraud Unit Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba. Federal officials are reminding the public to use secure mail receptacles, hold mail when away, and report suspicious activity near mailboxes—because in neighborhoods from Hammond to Ponchatoula, the next theft could be just one unlocked box away.
