CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a bid to combat the prescription drug abuse epidemic, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson today declared October 25, 2025, as National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The Western District of North Carolina’s U.S. Attorney’s Office is teaming up with the DEA and local law enforcement for free, anonymous medication disposal at designated sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ferguson emphasized, “Clearing out your medicine cabinet can literally save lives.” He highlighted how unused prescription drugs fall into the wrong hands and stressed the importance of participating in the event to prevent misuse and keep communities safe.
Since its inception over a decade ago, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has facilitated the secure disposal of millions of pounds of medications. Last year alone, the DEA collected over 1.3 million pounds nationwide. This October’s take-back event aims to surpass that figure.
“We’re all in this together,” Ferguson said. “It takes a few minutes but can make a significant difference.” To locate a nearby collection site, the public is advised to visit www.DEATakeBack.com. Year-round disposal options are also available at over 13,000 participating pharmacies and facilities.
The event underscores the alarming rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S., as well as accidental poisonings and overdoses resulting from these medications. It’s a reminder for all to do their part in curbing this epidemic by responsibly disposing of old, unwanted, or expired drugs.
