Michaelle Martinez, 38, of Marrero, Louisiana, is staring down a federal indictment for stealing Social Security Administration (SSA) funds meant for vulnerable beneficiaries. The superseding indictment unsealed today charges Martinez with Theft of Government Funds, a felony that exposes her to up to ten years behind bars.
According to federal prosecutors, Martinez exploited her position to identify individuals entitled to retroactive or back payments from the SSA. She then altered their direct deposit information, rerouting thousands of dollars into bank accounts she controlled. After the illicit transfers cleared, she quietly reset the deposit details—hoping beneficiaries wouldn’t notice the theft before it was too late.
The scheme, described in the indictment, relied on timing and deception. By manipulating internal systems, Martinez allegedly intercepted payments that could mean survival for disabled or elderly recipients. The fraud only came to light through an ongoing investigation by the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General, which traced irregular transactions back to her.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite confirmed the indictment, emphasizing that while charges have been filed, Martinez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. “This is a betrayal of public trust,” Polite said. “These are funds meant for some of the most vulnerable Americans—stealing them is not a victimless crime.”
If convicted, Martinez faces a maximum of ten years in federal prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Authorities are now working to identify all affected beneficiaries and recover any remaining stolen funds.
Fraud Unit Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba is leading the prosecution. The case underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in federal benefit systems and the lengths some insiders will go to exploit them. As the case moves toward trial, investigators warn that similar schemes may still be lurking in the shadows of public programs.
