Batesland Man Sentenced for Firearm Crime
A Batesland man has been sentenced for a serious crime involving a firearm. William Morrisette, 26, was found guilty of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in federal court.
On February 29, 2016, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence, which includes 14 months in custody and 2 years of supervised release. Morrisette was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The conviction stems from Morrisette being in possession of a Ruger 9mm handgun on August 23, 2015, near Pine Ridge. The firearm was seized after Morrisette had previously been convicted of a felony assault on a federal officer.
The investigation into the crime was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.
Morrisette was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of committing crimes involving firearms, particularly for those who have been previously convicted of felonies.
U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the sentencing, highlighting the importance of keeping communities safe from gun violence. The case is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in South Dakota to combat violent crime.
Morrisette’s guilty plea was entered on November 13, 2015, after being indicted on October 20, 2015, for the crime. The case is a significant victory for law enforcement and a reminder that those who break the law will be held accountable.
