Bay St. Louis Man Gets 57-Month Sentence for Fentanyl Smuggling

Gulfport, MS – A Bay St. Louis native has been meted out a 57-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a fentanyl trafficking conspiracy. The grim tally was handed down by the U.S. District Court in Gulfport.

Kolby Zu Sims, 21, pled guilty on March 6, 2024, to interstate travel in furtherance of drug trafficking. Sims’s downfall began when law enforcement responded to a complaint about drug activity at the Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis. Agents observed a red Toyota Camry picking up two suspects and later crossing state lines into Louisiana for what appeared to be a drug deal.

Following a traffic stop, Sims was identified as one of the occupants who had helped fund the purchase of approximately 1000 fentanyl-laced pills from Louisiana to be sold in Mississippi. Fentanyl, described by the DEA as 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin, poses a deadly threat when handled even in tiny quantities.

U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Anessa Daniels-McCaw of the DEA announced the sentencing. The case was jointly investigated by the DEA and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rose prosecuting the charges.
