GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A Bay Village man has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for a fraudulent investment scheme that bilked a victim out of half a million dollars. Frederick C. Bryant, 45, admitted to embezzling $505,832 from an individual he promised a 5 percent return on their investment. Instead, Bryant converted the funds to his own use, and court documents show he failed to report this income to the Internal Revenue Service.
Bryant was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dan Polster to serve 46 months in prison. In addition to the prison term, he has been ordered to pay $505,832 in restitution to his victim and more than $115,000 in interest and penalties to the IRS.
The defendant pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of mail fraud and tax evasion. Assistant United States Attorney Vasile C. Katsaros is handling the prosecution, which followed an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service.
According to court records, Bryant guaranteed his victim a 5 percent return on their investment but instead diverted the funds for personal gain. His fraudulent activities were uncovered after an extensive investigation into his financial transactions.
