BEAUMONT, TX – A brazen overnight break-in at a Beaumont bank landed 28-year-old Michael Anthony Jones a 30-month federal prison sentence, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced today. Jones, a Beaumont resident, smashed his way into the Chase Bank branch on Washington Blvd. last June, making off with nearly three grand.
According to court documents, Jones shattered a window at the bank on June 8, 2012, while it was closed. He pilfered $2,908.50 in cash before disappearing. The heist didn’t stay unsolved for long. Jones was apprehended in Louisiana on August 2, 2012, initially on an unrelated matter. It was during questioning for that charge that he confessed to the Beaumont bank burglary.
A federal grand jury indicted Jones on November 7, 2012, charging him with bank burglary. He subsequently pleaded guilty on January 14, 2013. Today, U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone handed down the 30-month sentence, a clear message that targeting financial institutions won’t be tolerated in the Eastern District of Texas.
Beyond the prison term, Jones is also on the hook for full restitution. He’s been ordered to pay back the stolen $2,908.50 to Chase Bank. It’s a small consolation for the bank, but it’s a start. Sources tell Grimy Times that Jones has a prior record of petty theft, suggesting this wasn’t his first brush with the law.
The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and the Beaumont Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall L. Fluke led the prosecution, building a solid case based on Jones’ own admission and likely, forensic evidence gathered from the scene. This case demonstrates effective inter-agency cooperation in bringing down local criminals.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on Jones’ fate within the federal prison system. This serves as another reminder that crime, even seemingly ‘small’ burglaries, carries significant consequences, especially when federal agencies get involved. Expect a full rundown of Jones’ prison assignment in the coming weeks.
