BECKLEY, W.Va. – Anthony Broadnax, 61, of Beckley, has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for violating the Federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) by failing to register as a sex offender after relocating from Virginia to West Virginia.
Broadnax’s transgression spanned from May 2021 through July 26, 2021, when he resided in Beckley without updating his registration. His SORNA obligations stemmed from prior convictions for aggravated sexual battery and rape in Prince William County, Virginia.
Court documents and statements reveal Broadnax’s failure to comply with SORNA despite his criminal history that includes a previous conviction for failing to register as a sex offender.
The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, mandates comprehensive standards for sex offender registration and notification across the U.S. It aims to bolster national sex offender tracking and community awareness programs.
United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston emphasized the importance of enforcing SORNA requirements: “It is vitally important that sex offenders are tracked and communities are kept aware through the enforcement of these registration and notification requirements.” The prosecution of SORNA violators like Broadnax was made possible by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) and its collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies.
The sentence was imposed by Chief United States District Judge Frank W. Volk, with Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald prosecuting the case.
