BECKLEY, W.Va. – United States Attorney Booth Goodwin has revealed that Andrea Austin, 42, from Sophia, West Virginia, has entered a guilty plea in a major heroin distribution case.
Austin confessed to selling heroin to an undercover informant on East Camellia Street in Sophia on August 11, 2014. The drug bust is part of an ongoing crackdown by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia against prescription drug and opiate abuse.
The defendant now faces a staggering penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $1 million. Her sentencing hearing is set for June 17, 2015.
United States District Judge Irene C. Berger oversaw the plea hearing, which marks another significant victory for the Beckley/Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit investigating drug trafficking in the area.
This case is a testament to the commitment of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to eliminate open-air drug markets and combat the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin across Southern District communities.
United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia has been relentless in pursuing illegal pill trafficking and reducing the availability of such dangerous drugs.
