In a stark reminder of the consequences of illicit activities, Benjamin Robert Taylor, 36, of Hortense, Georgia, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for possessing stolen firearms. On 110 months in prison, Taylor will serve three years of supervised release following his stay in prison. This comes after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Taylor’s co-defendant, Brian James Wilson, 27, of Brunswick, Georgia, received a sterner sentence. Earlier this year, Wilson was sentenced to 120 months in prison by Chief United States District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood after pleading guilty to the same charge. Like Taylor, Wilson will also be required to serve three years of supervised release.
The discovery of the stolen firearms, including a pistol, two semi-automatic rifles, and two shotguns, came after a traffic stop. A search of the vehicle, which was occupied by both Taylor and Wilson, revealed the stolen firearms. Further investigation revealed that all of the firearms seized during the traffic stop had been stolen in a burglary committed the day before.
Notably, both Taylor and Wilson were multi-convicted felons at the time of the offense. This history of prior convictions underscores the severity of the charges against them.
The joint investigation that led to the conviction of Taylor and Wilson was conducted by the ATF, the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office, and the Glynn County Police Department. T. Shane Mayes, the Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
