SHREVEPORT, La. – Willie Player, 40, of Benton, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison for over twelve years after being sentenced for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine distribution network. Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced today that Player received 151 months (12 years, 7 months) followed by three years of supervised release.
The bust stemmed from a narcotics investigation launched in 2018, targeting Player and his associates who were flooding the Shreveport/Bossier City area with meth. Investigators surveilled Player, intercepting phone calls that laid bare his arrangements for buying and selling significant quantities of the drug. Between April and June of that year, law enforcement tracked Player making multiple trips from the Western District of Louisiana to Waskom, Texas, specifically to procure methamphetamine.
The operation came crashing down on June 13, 2018. After a purchase in Waskom, Texas, Player attempted to evade a traffic stop initiated by Caddo Parish Sheriff’s deputies. Ignoring commands, Player floored it, running a red light at West 70th and Pines Road and colliding with a passing truck. The impact grazed the rear of the vehicle, but Player didn’t slow down. He lost control, careening into utility poles before ultimately smashing into a fence surrounding a local apartment complex.
A search of the wrecked vehicle revealed the methamphetamine Player had just purchased. He was immediately arrested and charged with Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine. The evidence was damning, and on November 14, 2019, Player finally pleaded guilty, accepting responsibility for his crimes.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, showcasing interagency cooperation in tackling the region’s drug problem. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown skillfully prosecuted the case, securing a substantial sentence that reflects the seriousness of Player’s offenses.
This case serves as a stark reminder that those involved in the trafficking of dangerous drugs will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal prosecutions and expose the underbelly of crime in Louisiana and beyond. # # #
