Defendant Sentenced for Illicit Pain Clinic Operations

A New Orleans pain clinic owner has been held accountable for his role in a scheme to illegally dispense controlled substances. Kenneth Knight, 69, was sentenced to 60 months in prison for conspiring with others to dispense quantities of Schedule II and Schedule III controlled substances outside the scope of professional practice and not for legitimate medical purposes.

Knight operated the Axcess Medical Clinic in New Orleans, where he directed a physician, Dr. Barbara Bruce, to write prescriptions without conducting medical examinations of patients. The two split the profits from the illicit prescriptions, with Knight receiving 50 percent of the earnings through his medical practice.

The investigation into Knight’s operations involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Harahan Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Internal Revenue Service. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John F. Murphy and Bill McSherry.

Knight’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Barry W. Ashe, who imposed a $15,000 fine in addition to the prison term and supervised release.

The DEA’s Tactical Diversion Squad Task Force, comprising local and federal law enforcement agencies, worked together to bring Knight to justice. Their efforts demonstrate the ongoing commitment to combating prescription drug abuse and protecting the public from those who would exploit the healthcare system for personal gain.

The case serves as a reminder that individuals who engage in illicit activities, including the illegal dispensation of controlled substances, will be held accountable for their actions. The sentence imposed on Knight reflects the seriousness with which the court views such crimes.

Kenneth Knight’s case is a stark example of the devastating consequences of prescription drug abuse and the importance of robust law enforcement efforts to prevent it. As the nation continues to grapple with the opioid crisis, the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and healthcare professionals has never been more pressing.
