Fort Dodge, Iowa – In a shocking turn of events, a local man has been sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for his role in distributing methamphetamine in the Fort Dodge area. Jermiah Preston, a 34-year-old resident of Fort Dodge, pleaded guilty to one count of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of distribution of a controlled substance.
According to court documents, Preston admitted to aiding and abetting in the distribution of methamphetamine in September 2015. The following month, law enforcement attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Preston at a local hotel, during which he was observed throwing a handgun out the window of his room. Preston was subsequently confronted by law enforcement and was found to be in possession of the firearm illegally, as a convicted felon.
Preston was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand to 84 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $200 was imposed, and he will be required to serve a 4-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Preston is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn Wehde and Special Assistant United States Attorney Ajay Alexander, with assistance from the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
