Bergen County Man Bribes US Consular Adjudicator
TRENTON, N.J. – Luis Santos, a 37-year-old man from Teaneck, New Jersey, has been charged with bribing a US Consular Adjudicator in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Santos pleaded guilty to one count of bribery of a public official, a charge that carries a maximum potential penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to court documents, Santos paid $2,381 to the US Consular Adjudicator to favorably handle and review non-immigrant visas, which allowed individuals from the Dominican Republic to apply for entry into the United States.
‘We will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who attempt to corrupt our public officials,’ said U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito.
Santos’ sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2018.
The investigation was led by special agents of the U.S Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, who were credited by U.S. Attorney Carpenito for their work.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen D. Stringer of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Special Prosecutions Division in Newark.
Santos is represented by Thomas Ambrosio Esq. of Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
