Barry Goldstein, Distributing Child Pornography, New Jersey 2018

Bergen County, NJ – A Bergen County resident has been taken into custody and charged with distributing disturbing images of child sexual abuse.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Barry Goldstein, 46, of Bergenfield, NJ, was arrested at his home and charged with one count of distributing child pornography. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison, and a $250,000 fine.

The investigation, led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), uncovered a shocking trend of explicit conversations between Goldstein and an undercover officer regarding the sexual abuse of children. The conversations took place over an instant messaging mobile application in May and June 2018.

During the conversations, Goldstein allegedly shared multiple files depicting child sexual abuse with the undercover officer. The officer, posing as a user of the application, was able to track the IP addresses associated with Goldstein’s home and identify him as the source of the disturbing content.

On August 29, 2018, law enforcement officers searched Goldstein’s residence, interviewed him, and arrested him. He made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Hammer in Newark federal court.

While the charge and allegations in the complaint are merely accusations, and Goldstein is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty, the severity of the charges cannot be overstated. As U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito emphasized, the distribution of child pornography is a serious offense that carries significant penalties, including lengthy prison sentences.

The case is being prosecuted by Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney Zach Intrater of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark. As the investigation continues, it is clear that Goldstein’s actions have had a profound impact on the lives of the victims depicted in the disturbing images.

The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for law enforcement and the community to remain vigilant in the fight against child exploitation and abuse. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
