A brazen case of child pornography possession has come to light in Middlesex County, with a 33-year-old Edison man charged with viewing over 100 images of child sexual abuse, a crime that now puts him squarely in the crosshairs of a 10-year minimum sentence.
According to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, Andrew Chu, 33, of Edison, New Jersey, is charged by complaint with one count of possession of child pornography. This heinous crime was committed between May 2023 and November 2023, during which time Chu allegedly used his computer to view approximately 100 images of child sexual abuse, including depictions involving pre-pubescent children.
This is not Chu’s first brush with the law; in 2021, he was convicted of possession of child pornography in a prior federal prosecution in New Jersey. As a repeat offender, Chu now faces a mandatory minimum term of 10 years in prison, a maximum of 20 years in prison, and a $250,000 fine.
Law enforcement officials have credited special agents of Homeland Security Investigations Newark, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge William S. Walker, with the investigation that led to Chu’s charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariel Douek of the General Crimes Unit in Newark represents the government in this case.
Chu made his initial appearance today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court and was subsequently detained. The charge and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and Chu is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
