Kaitlin Plascjak, Child Pornography Distribution, Pennsylvania 2016

Kaitlin Plascjak, a 29-year-old woman from Imperial, Pennsylvania, has been hit with federal charges tied to the distribution and possession of child pornography, marking the latest flashpoint in the Justice Department’s ongoing crackdown on child sexual exploitation.

A five-count indictment handed down by a Pittsburgh federal grand jury on January 24 — and unsealed today — accuses Plascjak of distributing graphic images of minors being sexually exploited on three separate dates: May 5, May 8, and June 28, all in 2016. The charges paint a grim picture of a calculated pattern of behavior rooted in the darkest corners of the internet.

On August 18, 2016, Plascjak allegedly possessed computer files containing videos and still images depicting minors, some under the age of 12, engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The indictment states she knowingly accessed and retained these files, violating federal laws designed to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.

If convicted, Plascjak faces up to 80 years in prison and a fine of $1,000,000.00, or both. Sentencing, per federal guidelines, will hinge on the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal history, though prosecutors are expected to push for maximum penalties given the nature of the material involved.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, and the Allegheny County Police. Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar is leading the prosecution for the federal government, underscoring the multi-agency effort behind the indictment.

This prosecution falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide DOJ initiative launched in 2006 to dismantle networks of child sexual exploitation. The program combines federal, state, and local forces to hunt down offenders and rescue victims. As this case shows, the digital trail left by predators is increasingly leading straight to federal court. An indictment is not a conviction — Plascjak is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
