MADISON, WIS. — Bernard Seidling, the 74-year-old Hayward man who turned bankruptcy court into a personal stage for his financial shenanigans, was sentenced yesterday to seven years in federal prison and ordered to pay a $500,000 fine for his fraudulent escapades.
‘Seidling was a recurring and shameless financial predator,’ said U.S. Attorney O’Shea, whose office put the squeeze on the defendant. ‘Our prosecutors and partners have worked tirelessly to hold him accountable, ensuring justice prevails in Wisconsin.’
The FBI’s Milwaukee Special Agent in Charge Michael Hensle echoed the sentiment, stating that the sentence reflected the bureau’s commitment to public trust by pursuing those who exploit others for personal gain.
Seidling’s fraud began with a 2022 bankruptcy filing, where he claimed to have minimal assets and only one bank account. The truth? A staggering $20 million hidden behind sham trusts and partnerships. He also sold a waterfront home in Key West, Fla., for over $3 million—details he conveniently omitted.
But it didn’t end there. Over his objections, the bankruptcy court converted Seidling’s case from reorganization to liquidation. During this time, he falsely claimed he couldn’t meaningfully participate in the bankruptcy due to health issues, yet he continued managing his businesses and playing tennis. He even represented himself in state court litigation.
Seidling’s contempt conviction stemmed from violating a bankruptcy court order that prohibited transferring assets. Despite this, he transferred real estate, drained bank accounts, and squirreled away over $1 million in cash. His criminal history, including prior federal convictions for interference with commerce and mail fraud, played into the harsh sentence handed down by Judge James D. Peterson, who noted Seidling’s repeated use of courts to extort people.
