A North Carolina woman has been sentenced to 16 months imprisonment for her role in a three-year tax return conspiracy that defrauded the government of over $2 million.
Bertha Battle, 40, was found guilty of conspiring with others to file false tax returns for clients of Community Tax Services LLC in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Between 2011 and 2016, Battle and her co-conspirators filed tax returns that claimed false education credits and other illegitimate items in order to fraudulently generate clients’ tax refunds.
The scam resulted in a loss of more than $2 million in tax dollars, according to the IRS.
Battle pleaded guilty to the charge on June 18, 2020.
In addition to her prison sentence, Battle was ordered to pay $59,268 in restitution.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan Ontjes, with assistance from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations (IRS-CI).
United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan presided over the sentencing hearing.
