Rapid City woman Betsy Running Shield was dealt a harsh hand recently after being sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for her role in a meth trafficking conspiracy.
The 37-year-old Running Shield was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and was handed down a 3-year supervised release term, as well as a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The meth trafficking conspiracy, which began on an unknown date and continued until March 2020, involved Running Shield and at least one other person reaching an agreement to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture of a substance containing methamphetamine in the District of South Dakota.
According to evidence presented in the case, Running Shield received methamphetamine from a co-conspirator for redistribution in South Dakota and elsewhere. The agreement reached between Running Shield and her co-conspirator resulted in a significant amount of methamphetamine being distributed throughout the region.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Tamara Nash prosecuted the case, bringing justice to those affected by the meth trafficking conspiracy.
Running Shield was given the option to self-surrender on or before January 5, 2021, after being sentenced on November 13, 2020, by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.
