Rapid City Man Sentenced to 18 Months for Possession of Unregistered Firearm
Rapid City, SD – In a shocking turn of events, U.S. Circuit Judge Jonathan A. Kobes has sentenced 23-year-old Shane McCloskey to 18 months in federal prison for possession of an unregistered firearm. The sentencing took place on January 31, 2023.
Mccloskey, a previously convicted felon, was found in possession of a SCCY, model CPX-2, 9mm Luger caliber, semi-automatic pistol in Rapid City, on October 26, 2021. The firearm was discovered after McCloskey came into contact with law enforcement.
McCloskey pleaded guilty to the charges on October 7, 2022, after being indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2022 for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuting the case.
McCloskey was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as part of his sentence.
The court’s decision sends a strong message that possession of unregistered firearms will not be tolerated, and those who break the law will face severe consequences.
