GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Tyrell Thin Elk, a resident of Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for his refusal to comply with sex offender registration laws. The 35-year-old was handed down a 21-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 19, 2017.
Thin Elk’s conviction and sentence follow an investigation that revealed he had not registered as a sex offender as required by federal law. His prior federal conviction for a sex offense mandates lifelong registration, but Thin Elk had failed to comply in August 2016.
The United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the sentence, which also includes a five-year term of supervised release and a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Thin Elk was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 12, 2016, and pleaded guilty on March 8, 2017. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case with the U.S. Marshals Service leading the investigation.
The defendant has been immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
