Brighton Veit, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, South Dakota 2021

Brighton Veit, a 22-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. The grim charges come after it was alleged that Veit failed to properly register and update his sex offender status between September 14th and September 27th, 2021.

Veit’s legal woes began in November 2020 when he was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. As a direct result of this conviction, he became legally required to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). Despite his obligation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged him with neglecting this critical responsibility.

Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes announced the charges against Veit on November 9th, 2021. The defendant appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A Moreno on November 16th and entered a not guilty plea. If convicted, Veit could face up to 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, life on supervised release, and a contribution of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

According to federal law, restitution may also be imposed upon conviction. The investigation into this case is being carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuting the charges.

The defendant has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. As of now, no trial date has been set for Veit’s case.

Veit is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, where he will have the opportunity to present his side of the story.
