United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler dropped a tough sentence on Kimo Little Bird, a 35-year-old from Little Eagle, South Dakota, for his brazen refusal to comply with federal sex offender registration laws.
Little Bird, whose life had already been marked by a sex offense conviction in federal court, was handed a 27-month prison term by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on January 4, 2017. The sentence also includes a five-year period of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The saga began when Little Bird failed to register as a sex offender, as required by federal law, between June 16, 2016, and September 13, 2016. This defiance came after his previous conviction for a sex offense, which necessitated his registration as a sex offender for the next 25 years, starting in 2006.
On September 13, 2016, a federal grand jury indicted Little Bird, who later pled guilty on October 31, 2016. The U.S. Marshals Service took the lead in investigating this case and Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley was responsible for prosecuting it.
Upon his sentencing, Little Bird was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, ensuring that he would serve his time and face the consequences of his actions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the federal government’s commitment to enforcing sex offender registration laws and protecting communities from potential harm.
