Ennors Quick Bear, Sex Offender Registration Failure, South Dakota 2017

Ennors Quick Bear, 28, of St. Francis, South Dakota, was slammed with a 15-month sentence for failing to register as a sex offender, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

The U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange imposed the harsh penalty on January 31, 2017, after Bear was found guilty of not updating his registration within three business days of moving to a new address in St. Francis.

Bear’s trouble began in 2012 when he was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in federal court. As a registered sex offender, the law demands that Bear keep his information current, especially when changing addresses or employment. However, on August 9, 2016, Bear relocated but didn’t update his registration, leaving authorities on the hunt for him.

Bear was on federal supervised release at the time of his offense and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was apprehended without incident on September 15, 2016, in St. Francis. His failure to register between August 12, 2016, and his arrest resulted in the severe sentence.

The investigation into Bear’s case was spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson leading the prosecution. In addition to the jail time, Bear must serve five years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Quick Bear was promptly transferred into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
