Tnuza Jamal Hassan, Attempting to Provide Material Support to al-Qaida, Minnesota 2018

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – TNUZA JAMAL HASSAN, a 22-year-old Minneapolis woman, pleaded guilty today to attempting to provide material support to the designated foreign terrorist organization al-Qa’ida (AQ), according to United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald.

HASSAN, while a freshman at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, is accused of drafting a letter in March 2017 that encouraged others to join AQ and was delivered anonymously to two other students for recruitment purposes. She later denied any involvement during an FBI interview.

In September 2017, HASSAN purchased tickets from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport to Dubai and Kabul, intending to join AQ in Afghanistan with no plans to return to the United States. However, she was prevented from traveling due to a lack of visa for Kabul.

On January 17, 2018, HASSAN, living without permission at SCU, attempted to set fires on the SCU campus as retaliation against the U.S. for its stance against AQ in Afghanistan. She has been charged with one count of first-degree arson in Ramsey County District Court.

This case was investigated by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force, St. Paul Police Department, and the St. Paul Fire Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Winter is prosecuting the case.

HASSAN faces serious consequences for her actions, which have endangered lives and national security.
