Fort Thompson’s Megan Howe is facing a stern charge after she allegedly laid hands on a federal officer. The 21-year-old woman, indicted by a federal grand jury, has been charged with assaulting, resisting, and impeding a federal officer while the officer was performing his duties.
The incident, which led to Howe’s arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno, unfolded on December 11, 2016. Howe entered a not guilty plea during her appearance on March 29, 2017.
Should she be convicted, the consequences are severe: up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine await her, along with 3 years of supervised release and restitution that may exceed $100. Howe was released on bond pending trial, but no date has been set for the hearing.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs officer involved in the incident is at the center of this violent confrontation, which has now become a federal case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is tasked with prosecuting the matter.
