GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a shocking turn of events in South Dakota, 23-year-old Richard Peneaux from Mission has been charged with Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer. The grim allegations against Peneaux surface after he is said to have forcibly assaulted a Rosebud Sioux Tribe law enforcement officer on March 23, 2017.

Peneaux was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 12, 2017, and swiftly appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno. He entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against him.

The severity of Peneaux’s alleged actions is underscored by the stringent penalties he faces upon conviction. If found guilty, Peneaux could be sentenced to up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, followed by 3 years of supervised release. Additionally, restitution may be ordered, and he will be required to contribute $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, Randolph J. Seiler, announced the charges, noting that Peneaux is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation into this incident has been spearheaded by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the prosecution.

Peneaux was promptly remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending his trial, and as of yet, no trial date has been set.
