BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The grim reaper of local streets, Henry Sirnard Russell, 43, has been handed a life sentence of more than twelve years for his heinous armed robbery and gun charges.
U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton L. Peeples announced the sentencing before U.S. District Court Judge Anna Manasco, who imposed 155 months behind bars on Russell for interference with commerce by robbery, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The defendant’s guilty plea was entered in July 2022.
The October 12, 2021, attack at the Chevron convenience store in Hoover was a chilling reminder of the terror that armed robbers can unleash. The clerk reported an armed male made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and drove away in a grey SUV. The police issued a BOLO, and Vestavia Hills officers found the matching vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase.
Russell’s escape tactics were desperate as he refused to exit his vehicle and fled on foot after a short pursuit. Law enforcement agencies converged, deploying drones, K-9 units, and a helicopter in a relentless search. The night was long for Russell, but it ended with a Hoover Police Officer spotting him and officers rushing in to nab the suspect.
Russell’s prior convictions for Domestic Violence, Assault (Second Degree), and Robbery (First and Second Degree) paint a portrait of a man who has terrorized communities. The FBI, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Homewood Police Department, Hoover Police Department, and Vestavia Hills Police Department investigated the case with Assistant United States Attorney Darius Greene leading the prosecution.
