Cory Ellis Easley, Felon Firearm Possession, Alabama 2024

United States Attorney Kenyen R. Brown of the Southern District of Alabama announced today that Cory Ellis Easley, 40, from Fayette, Missouri, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, which is the statutory maximum for the offense, also includes a $100 special assessment and 3 years of supervised release. In addition, Easley must pay restitution totaling $8,501.88.

The crime spree that led to this conviction began on September 7, 2015, when Saraland police officers were dispatched to Chunchula, Alabama to investigate a stolen vehicle. En route, an officer noticed a truck matching the description of the stolen car being driven erratically. As the officer approached the scene, he witnessed a white male flee from the truck into a garage. Gunfire erupted, forcing the officer to take cover. Backup arrived, and after a series of chaotic events, Cory Easley was apprehended.

Easley, already a convicted felon with numerous felony convictions for drug, theft, and assault offenses, was indicted in October 2015 on one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to the charge in January 2016.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Saraland Police Department, and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Sinan Kalayoglu handled the prosecution.

During the initial confrontation at the garage in Chunchula, Easley caused significant damage to neighborhood properties. After a chase that included shots fired from both sides, Easley was found hiding in a mud hole with a loaded Glock 17 9mm semi-automatic pistol on his person.
