FORT SMITH, AR – James Allen Price, a 42-year-old Van Buren man and registered sex offender, will spend the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced for transporting child pornography. U.S. District Judge P.K. Holmes III handed down the 120-month sentence today, followed by 10 years of supervised release. The case underscores the relentless pursuit of those who prey on children, even in the digital shadows.
The investigation began in July 2023 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) flagged suspicious activity – the emailing of child pornography between two accounts. Law enforcement quickly zeroed in on Price as the owner of both accounts. A federal search warrant executed at his residence yielded a trove of seized electronic devices, confirming the disturbing content. Price didn’t bother with denial, readily admitting to authorities that he had, in fact, emailed the images to himself.
The images themselves depicted children under the age of twelve, a detail that fueled the severity of the charges and the ultimate sentence. Price’s prior status as a registered sex offender significantly compounded the crime, demonstrating a pattern of predatory behavior. This wasn’t a first offense, and the court clearly recognized the continued risk he posed.
“This case is a stark reminder of the depravity that exists and the importance of protecting our most vulnerable citizens,” said U.S. Attorney David Clay Fowlkes of the Western District of Arkansas. “We will continue to aggressively pursue those who engage in this horrific exploitation.” The investigation was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Van Buren Police Department, and the Joplin, Missouri Police Department, showcasing the power of interagency cooperation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Carly Marshall skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing Price to justice. This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The program aims to dismantle networks of child exploitation and rescue victims, leveraging federal, state, and local resources. More information on Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.justice.gov/psc.
Court documents related to the case are publicly accessible through the Public Access to Electronic Records website at www.pacer.gov. While a decade behind bars offers some measure of justice, the damage inflicted on the children depicted in those images is irreparable. This case serves as a chilling example of the dark underbelly of the internet and the ongoing battle to protect innocent lives.
