Birmingham Man Jailed for Gun Crime

A 27-year-old Birmingham man has been sentenced to prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Thomas Edison Douglas, 27, was handed a 37-month term behind bars after he was found to be in possession of a loaded Glock 9mm pistol.

According to reports, Douglas was arrested in September 2020 by police in Saraland, Alabama, after a 911 call was made regarding a domestic dispute. When officers encountered Douglas outside a local hotel, they recovered the loaded firearm, which had been concealed in his waistband.

Douglas admitted to officers that he had the gun for his protection, and that he had previously been convicted of a felony robbery. As a result of his prior conviction, Douglas admitted that he knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Senior United States District Court Judge Callie V.S. Granade handed down the sentence, ordering Douglas to serve a three-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison. During this time, he will undergo testing and treatment for substance abuse.

The court did not impose a fine, but ordered Douglas to pay $100 in special assessments. U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama made the announcement.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Saraland Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.

Douglas’ imprisonment serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing crimes while in possession of firearms. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
