In a shocking landslide, Cole L. Blease, the infamous self-styled prohibitionist and proponent of lynching, has been vanquished in the Democratic primary for South Carolina’s Senate seat. On September 10, 1930, nearly complete returns indicated that former Congressman James F. Byrnes was the clear winner, claiming a majority of 4,970 votes with only 212 of the state’s 1,528 precincts yet to be counted. Blease’s defeat marks a significant blow to his twisted ideology, which included advocating for lynching as a means to stop ‘Negro attacks on white women’. The racist rhetoric, which reeked of hatred and intolerance, ultimately proved to be his downfall.
The venomous campaign pitted Byrnes, a respected statesman, against Blease, a man notorious for his draconian views. The vote stood at Byrnes 119,310 and Blease 114,346, a crushing margin that left little doubt about the outcome. Byrnes’s victory is a testament to the power of compassion and empathy over hate and intolerance.
The primary for the Governor’s nomination was equally contentious, with Ira C. Blackwood, a candidate from Spartanburg, edging out Olin D. Johnston by a narrow margin of 693 votes. The vote stood at Blackwood 116,966 and Johnston 116,273. However, it was Blease’s defeat that stole the headlines in the aftermath of the election.
As the South Carolina Democrats celebrated their hard-won victories, another upset was brewing in the neighboring state of Colorado. George H. Shaw, a Republican, and Edward P. Costigan, a Democrat, emerged as the respective nominees for the Colorado Senate seat. The outcome was a stark reminder that, even in the tumultuous 1930s, democracy could still produce unexpected results.
