Krasner’s Cop Killer Cover-Up
PHILADELPHIA – In a scathing speech delivered to the Citizens’ Crime Commission of the Greater Delaware Valley, U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain denounced the ‘culture of disrespect’ for law enforcement championed by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.
McSwain’s remarks, made on October 15, 2019, focused on Krasner’s defense-oriented litigation tactics and his efforts to free Mumia Abu-Jamal, the convicted cop killer. The U.S. Attorney dissected Krasner’s maneuvers in the latest Abu-Jamal appeal, accusing him of attempting to position the case to free the unrepentant killer.
‘Uncle Larry’s antics are especially dangerous because he is a prosecutor – and as such, he’s supposed to be on the side of law enforcement and community safety,’ McSwain said. ‘He took an oath to uphold the rule of law, to protect public safety, and to represent victims and the people of this City in our criminal justice system. Instead, through the policies he has put in place and through his various courtroom maneuvers, he has done just the opposite.’
The U.S. Attorney highlighted the dangers of Krasner’s policies, which he said often make the District Attorney as ‘dangerous as the criminals that he’s looking out for.’ McSwain also pointed to the rise in gun violence in Philadelphia, citing six reported shooting incidents over the past weekend that left two men dead and 13 injured.
McSwain’s speech was met with applause from the audience, which included law enforcement officials and citizens who appreciate the sacrifices made by those serving in law enforcement. The U.S. Attorney praised the work of the Citizens’ Crime Commission, saying that its mission to improve the quality of life of citizens in the Delaware Valley is ‘worthy’ and ‘shared’ by his office.
As the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, McSwain has the privilege of working with thousands of dedicated police officers, detectives, case agents, and prosecutors across the nine counties of the region. He commended the bravery and resilience of law enforcement officers, who he said are ‘honorable, courageous, selfless, and resilient.’
McSwain’s remarks were a clear rebuke of Krasner’s approach to law enforcement, which he said has created a culture of disrespect and fear among police officers. The U.S. Attorney’s comments are likely to escalate the tensions between his office and the Philadelphia DA’s office, which have been at odds over issues of public safety and law enforcement policy.
