NORFOLK, VA – Another street thug off the streets. Louis Bernard Lee, III, 26, of Norfolk, Virginia, received a 5-year federal prison sentence today for being a convicted felon illegally packing heat. The case stems from a 2021 traffic stop that blew the lid off a violent crime spree.
On May 7, 2021, an Old Dominion University Police Department (ODUPD) officer pulled Lee over for speeding. Turns out, he was already wanted for an attempted malicious wounding that went down on April 26, 2021. The stop quickly escalated when officers discovered two firearms stashed in Lee’s vehicle. Not just that, but also a high-capacity 30-round extended clip and a monstrous 50-round drum magazine – enough firepower to cause serious damage.
Lee, identified as a former affiliate of the notorious United Blood Nation gang, wasn’t exactly a stranger to the system. He already had a felony conviction on his record, making firearm possession a clear violation of federal law. But the guns weren’t just for show. Lee later admitted to using one of those weapons in the April 26th shooting, the incident that initially put him on law enforcement’s radar.
The Norfolk Circuit Court already dealt with the attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon charges, slapping Lee with a 4-year sentence on December 22, 2021. This latest 5-year sentence will run consecutively, meaning Lee will be spending a significant chunk of his life behind bars. It’s a double-tap for this repeat offender.
The sentencing was announced jointly by Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Ramin Fatehi, Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney; and Christopher Amon, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Washington Field Division. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Graham M. Stolle and Assistant U.S. Attorney John F. Butler handled the prosecution.
This case isn’t just about one man and one shooting. It’s part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) – a nationwide effort to target the most violent criminals and drive down crime rates. PSN focuses on getting the worst of the worst off the streets and working with local programs to prevent future violence.
