WASHINGTON D.C. – A D.C.-area Special Police Officer is facing time after a January shooting at a Northeast Washington convenience store. Chanel Clinton, 27, of Alexandria, Virginia, was sentenced today to 36 months in prison, with an additional 24 months suspended, for the brazen act. The case highlights the dangers of escalating conflicts, even for those sworn to uphold the law.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded on January 18, 2024, at the 7-Eleven located at 4854 Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE. Clinton, working as an armed Special Police Officer assigned to the store, became embroiled in a dispute with the victim – a woman she knew from the past. The argument ignited when the victim began filming Clinton in what was described as a “taunting manner.”
The verbal sparring moved outside to the parking lot, where witnesses say Clinton physically grabbed the victim in the face, initiating a fight. An off-duty MPD Sergeant, coincidentally inside the 7-Eleven, intervened briefly, attempting to separate the two women. But the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Clinton, ignoring orders to drop her weapon, allegedly drew her service firearm – a 9 mm Glock 17 – and fired a single shot, striking the victim in the shoulder just above the collarbone.
The off-duty sergeant immediately apprehended Clinton, taking her into custody at the scene. Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries. Investigators recovered the Glock 17, providing crucial evidence in the case. Clinton subsequently pleaded guilty on February 7, 2024, to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Superior Court Judge Erik Christian didn’t just hand down a prison sentence. Clinton will also serve five years of probation following her release. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith jointly announced the sentencing, praising the thorough investigation conducted by MPD detectives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Will Lawrence, who prosecuted the case, was also commended for his work. This case serves as a stark reminder that even those entrusted with enforcing the law are accountable for their actions, and a lapse in judgment can have devastating consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
